bbq calories

Health tips around “food holidays” like the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving often revolve around watching your calories, but do people truly know how many they are consuming from their favorite foods — and more importantly, how much exercise it would take to burn the calories off?

The “Diet Detective” Dr. Charles Platkin doesn’t think so. That’s why instead of just tossing out a number like “300 calories,” he goes one step further. Platkin reviews data and painstakingly analyzes tape of exercise to determine once and for all and easy-to-understand guide of what exercises are required to burn off your favorite foods this barbecue season. Would you grab that extra hot dog if you knew you’d have to swim for more than a half hour to burn it off?

2012 U.S. Barbecue Competition Calendar

When it comes to competitive barbecue festivals and contests, there are more certifying organizations than those that ruled heavyweight boxing in the ’80s and pro wresting in the ’90s — combined.

Like the Avignon popes, the world of barbecue has experienced its share of schisms and disagreements, but most of these divisions have been formed to feature a particular regional style of cooking or specific meats being smoked over a wood fire.

The National Capital Barbecue Battle is an annual competition between top BBQ restaurants from the Washington, DC area and around the country. If you love barbecue you’ll love the food samples, cooking demonstrations, interactive displays and children’s activities at this sizzling summer festival. The nation’s best barbecue teams cook-off for over $40,000 in cash and prizes in two major contests.

bbq fail

This is how NOT to grill this 4th of July Weekend.

In preparation for the long weekend, we’ve put together some of the finest explosive comedy in order to demonstrate what you shouldn’t do when you start cooking. These are some grade A BBQ fails that we think you should keep in mind before playing with fire.

Though we’re big fans of barbecue, we have to a slap a big ol’ DO NOT TRY THESE AT HOME label on this one. Seriously, it’s fun to look at videos online, but no one wins when you lose a hand.

Here’s to what’ll be left of your eyebrows come Tuesday.

The Kiwanis Club’s Smokin’ Hot Barbecue Fest on April 27 raised $9,360 that will be distributed to local nonprofits at the end of the year.

Each year, the local Kiwanis Club holds four main fundraising events, and at the end of the year the organization distributes the collected funds to four main local nonprofits: Avalon, Bacon Street, the Community Action Agency and the 4-H Educational Center.

The Club also gives smaller awards to other groups, including CHKD, The Arc of Greater Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Baseball League and the William & Mary College Swim Team Swim for Cancer.

The funds also support Kiwanis-sponsored service leadership clubs at CKI, Walsingham Academy, and Lafayette and Jamestown High Schools.

The barbecue event takes place every spring; this year’s event featured lots of food, games and live music. Kiwanis member Rolf Kramer thanked all the Kiwanis club members who helped during the event in an email announcing the final tally of funds.

He noted that the event was a success thanks to the help of volunteers outside the Club, too. “Making this a Kiwanis family event was the support we received from the clubs of our Service Leadership Program,” he said.

“The BBQ volunteers included members of our Aktion club, CKI from the College of William and Mary, and Key Clubbers from Jamestown HS, Lafayette, HS, and Walsingham Academy.

“We would also like to send a huge thank you to the many volunteers from 3 of our grant headliners: Avalon, Bacon Street and the W/JCC Community Action Center.”

The next Kiwanis event is the Shrimp Feast that will take place September 15 at the 4-H Educational Center.
